FAQs

What is dhaka?

Dhaka is a a traditional textile made by handloom in Nepal. It originated in Dhaka, Bangladesh yet became fashionable in the 1800s in Nepal when then Prime Minister's fashionista daughter took a liking to the fabric when she discovered it in her stay in Varansi, India. Such was her style influence that the trend took off in Nepal with such vigour that it came to be regarded as quintessentially Nepalese.

Dhaka is made on a handloom and is a time intensive process. Our shawls are made from traditional handlooms and clothing that includes dhaka features is made using a modern handloom (but is still and non-automated, handmade process).

Who makes your products?

All of our products are handmade by local artisans and small businesses (no more than 15 people in a business) to ensure that money stays within the community and goes directly to staff and business owners. None of our products are produced on mass scale or through automated processes.

If a product I like is sold out will I be able to order later?

Given that our products are handmade, we are unable to provide the exact same design for products again. We are, however, able to share with artisans and businesses which designs are popular and discuss producing similar designs for future products. Please let us know if there's a design or product you like which is no longer available and we will use the feedback for future product development.
